SENTENCE FLOWGRAPH: TURNING SENTENCES INTO VISUALS

Or Sentence Scrambles with a Visual Twist

Are you looking to add a bit of variety or a visual touch to scrambled or jumbled sentence activities? Here’s a great new tool for you to try!

Every sentence has its flow.

And every new tool deserves a bit of explanation.

This is my second (almost) serious ‘product’ review on the blog, following the Homework Machine.

A) Because my new creation, Sentence Flowgraph, totally deserves it, and
B) Because I’m keeping it short and to the point.

Introduction: address a desire or pain points

Jumbled or scrambled sentences are one of the classic activities found in almost every grammar or language test. On one hand, they check a student’s knowledge of sentence patterns; on the other, the combined words must form meaningful connections. And it’s all good, until the sentence gets more complex.

That’s when some students start to freeze, and scrambled sentences quickly become the most dreaded part of the test. Not exactly the ideal scenario for any test-taker and their teacher.

So I thought: why not build a tool that gives them a bit more support by turning sentences into explorable visuals?

In a nutshell, it’s the same idea I used in the brainteaser One Brainteaser We Know – But Don’t Know We Know, which I posted on this blog a few years back.

What is Sentence Flowgraph?

Sentence Flowgraph creates sentence flows that can be used as a scaffold for students, learning sentence patterns.

How does it work?

Type in your sentence or sentences. Choose the node and text colours to keep things readable, then hit ‘Create’. Easy.

Then you can drag the graph – it’s got a fun moooove to it! – click on individual nodes to highlight connections, and zoom in or out.

I’ve included two options here: Full Screen, to walk through the sentence with students while sharing your screen, and save the scrambled sentence and the flow as PDF Worksheet.

What else can you do with it?

Want a variation? Set the text to invisible, or set the nodes to white (or black + black text) and get students to reorder the jumbled words themselves.

To check, simply set the text color to black.

5/5

As always, I’m open to ideas! Have a fantastic summer and take time to recharge – you’ve earned it!
